Electronic ignition.

Their views pretty much follow my feelings about leccy ignition - although my TR7 came with Pertronix, which appears to work v well - and I have no intention of changing it. But I do carry a complete spare points dizzy with me at all times.........
As for the ACR generating 'spikes' - I seriously doubt it unless there are bad connections - the generated voltage is being 'sunk' into the battery at all times.

electricity is a strange animal, for instance, I read a peper on fault currents with relationship to HRC fuses and in the analysis it referred to the D.C. component which altered the current sine wave assymetrically. I didn't understand it or where this D.C. came from in an A.C. system under severe fault conditions?
I would guess at poor brush connection on the slip ring as being the source, but whether it is typical I don't know, however, electronic components should have adequate inbuilt protection for a 'dirty' power source.

That is why I never fit electronic ignition to any of my Minors - reliabillity! I have heard far too many stores of catastrophic and sudden electronic ignition failure.
If this happens you will have to be towed home, unless you can re-fit points, condensor and rotor arm at the side of the road, in which case you might as well stick with the standard ignition!

I fail to see the sense in the rush for electronic ignition.......It certainly doesn't give improved performance or economy, and it's hardly arduous to check/set points gap once per year!

Unless you are doing fantastic mileage......... My points etc are at least 10 years old and still going strong.

It sounds like that you're running a coil that requires a ballast resistor, w/out the resistor.just seems that in the 2 or so years i've had the car, i've changed the points etc almost 10 times i reckon. i know they are a consumable, but thats surely too many?
Or there is some other problem that is causing the points to fail prematurely, points should last 10,000 miles or more.

I burnt out 2 coils with electronic ignition, ballast resister fitted then had no problems.
On my new car have points, think I keep it that way.
