Snapped off thermostat housing stud

Post by nomisthewise »

Help!

I have snapped off a thermostat housing stud, and still can't get it out with a stud extractor

Can i use heat on this? Only I am worried about cracking the head

You won't crack the head with reasonable heat application. Be very wary of extractor - if it snaps off there is a real problem! Usually just apply release oil - lots of it - and try drilling the stud out - with a left-hand drill if you can get them. Start small and work upwards until there is virtually nothing left. The remains should then 'shell out' - and you can then clean up the thread with a 5/16" UNC tap.
