Fuel Pump

I started up my Moggy the other day, It started but then cut out. I am going to do all the normal checks
But wondering about the Fuel Pump. Can you clean them, or if it is the pump, just replace it?

Can you hear the pump tick when you turn on the ignition, sometimes a light tap with a screwdriver will be enough to start the pump if the pump definetly isn't running then undo the electrical connection, take the black cap off the top of the pump and you will see the electrical contacts underneath give them a clean and that should be enough to get the pump running.

The pump also has a filter in the bottom which should be cleaned now & again.

If you want to buy new don't be tempted by cheap replacements on Ebay buy from the normal suppliers as by all accounts the cheaper ones don't last very long before giving problems.

Test the pump before you replace it. Undo the petrol pipe at the carb and put the end in a bottle. Turn the ignition on and see if you get a good flow of fuel.

Going to have a look at it at the weekend. Seems so strange just to pack up. It as been stored over Winter, but have started it up often with no problems. Will have to see what saturday Brings.

If you hear the pump ticking when you first switch on - it's fine. I'm guessing it must have worked - or it wouldn't have started at all.

Check the fuel pump as you seem to suspect this, make sure is getting a supply and that it is ticking and pumping petrol into a glass jar is a good tip or as BMC says you will hear the pump tick when you first switch on the ignition.

If the fuel pump seems good and they rarely go wrong then do the usual checks of the fuel and ignition system as it cant be anything too extraordinary. I had something similar and it was one of the electrical connections had come off the coil. You do have petrol in the tank don't you as starting and stopping the engine whilst laid up will use some and if you have a small petrol leak then it would be easy to run out without realising.

Another likely suspect is the rotor arm as they also go without warning and need to be replaced as far as I know they can't be repaired.

I have just replaced a pump on a traveller that would stop without warning and then run normally again without any external influence (tapping). The poor chap had the AA out three times and each time the car was working perfectly again by the time they arrived and they could do or find nothing. I told the guy to carefully open the bonnet and tap the pump next time it happened. Sure enough the pump surged back into action the following two times and a new pump sorted it out.

The faulty pump was a new looking genuine SU electric pump and the points are in perfect condition. I suspect a possible loose connection somewhere inside, but haven't had chance to look at it yet.
