head gasket

Post by win »

Having just rebuilt my 1098 engine, and cured the crankshaft oil leak, I find I have a problem with the head gasket.
A new gasket was used, and torqued down, in sequence, it is now leaking oil, from below No 3 plug and the next to end head bolt, at dizzy drive side.
Any comments welcome before the head is removed, and what I should look for.

i thaught i had the same problem, turns out it was weeping down from the cam cover from the back of the engine and oozing across the joint then dribbling down the block at number 3..... so check that first i guess! if it is head problems again, did you do a thorough job removing the old gasket? did you check to see if the head was square, and most importantly if you didnt and the leak isnt progressive.... can you live with it as it is?

There's no oil feed there - so just wipe it clean - tighten the head down again - and wait and see..........

I agree with Phurn, looks like it might be dribbling down the back from the rocker cover and then round at the joint. Make sure you don't over-tighten the rocker cover! That can cause leaks

Hi
Oil still leaking from head, as you can see the source appears to be at the front of the head, adjacent to the oil gallery feed to the rockers.
The head is now removed, no obvious problem with the head gasket or block.
The head and block were scrupulously cleaned, torqued to 20ft lbs, then 45ft lbs when cold after a full warm up.

Any comments wecome.

Are you saying you ran it torqued to 20ft lbs?
