front Seats

Post by KenFern »

Hello,

I have been checking my 1970 4 door over for the MOT (only had it 6 months) and find there are small wooden blocks about 1" square and 4" long, fastened to the rear tubular parts with tie wraps. these seem to be needed to lift the rear of the seats up a bit otherwise they lean back too far . Is this normal? surely not and what will the tester think. the seats look like the originals and tip forward, is this normal on 4 door cars?

Hope someone can advise, many thanks

With the standard seats this was often done to help shorter people reach the pedals or to stop the seat wearing through the carpet and the floor.

What condition is the floor in where they rest?

A standard DIY fitting, like the clothes peg to hold the choke open :)

The MOT man may well consider that the seat is not secure. You can tighten the front clamps up really tight - so the seat won't tip up, and hope he is satisfied with that. For my MOT I have to remove the driver's adjustable seat and bolt in a non adjustable one. He won't accept the adjustable seat

Thanks for confirming its a usual mod, the floor is good where they sit. the local MOT place I use is pretty good and they have an interest in classic cars so should be ok then

Thanks

Provided the seat operates as it was designed and is securely bolted to the floor (as designed), the tester has no right to fail it.

Mike - he is an MOT tester - and I have found it best to just stay on the right side of them! The 'adjustable' seat is as supplied by BMC in the car - but the adjusting bracket is only on one side - and when the seat is tilted up it does rather 'wobble' because it is only secured on that one bracket. It only takes me minutes to swap the seat - and to fit the 'new' wiper blades I keep just for the MOT........
