Here we go again...Traveller wood...

Right well i shall get photos up asap...but my traveller has a few bits of rot....i'll be honest it is in dire need or replacement but being a 17 year old in college i'm not exactly 'loaded' does anyone know of anywhere or anyone who can 'replace' it cheaply...or free *If i were to be so lucky hahaha*

The kit for replacement is about £1000 it will cost about the same again to have it fitted.... and thats assuming theres no rotten metal when the timber is taken off (very unlikely)

You can sometimes get a complete used set of timber from a donor car but these dont come up very often and may not be in very good condition either!

If your timber only has a few poor areas you can get replacement sections relatively cheaply.

If you want a free set of timber then a trip to the local woodland with a chainsaw is called for

Trouble is it then has to be seasoned for a few years and finally shaped to fit

That's exactly what one of the lads here did. He went down to the south of Germany and bought himself a tree trunk-no joke!
Peter Simon, a retired, joiner did all his own woodwork. When I went to see it a few weeks back I couldn't believe it. A beautiful job! I must ask him how long it took. I like the mod he did on the doors.[frame][/frame][frame][/frame][frame][/frame]

Craftsmen like that fill me with awe and wonder at how amazingly gifted so-called "ordinary" people are... and a little bit envious, to be honest! Peter Simon's work is worth ten of the crappy bankers who screwed up the world's economy, and yet you can bet he won't get a 0.0001% of one of their bonuses when/if he retires.

I like the slight change he has made to the wood - centre of the back doors - one piece covering the other - saves the rain getting in. Beautiful car.

You can get "seconds" pieces from Travellers Timbers. I got a 2nd's side for £200 a few years ago, and fitted it myself- although as Taupe says, if the wood is rotten, the steel underneath is almost certain to be as well.

Another option is to scarf some pieces in. Other than that if it is just a case of getting the car through the MOT till you can afford proper rapirs, then wood hardener will harden any soft bits and wood filler and stain to fill any holes and gaps- a bodge yes, but if you have no cash then at least the car will be on the road.

Plus, since the advent of the computerised MOT, there is no section to fill in for "structural wood" So as long as the car is not literally falling apart you should be able to keep it on the road till funds allow for proper repairs.

Pictures will help a lot, if you know, or can make friends with a joiner or carpenter, rather than a chippy, then you can find out how to scarf wood in to replace rot.

I was lucky when I had a traveller, my dad is a carpenter and he patched up the dodgy bits for me.

Well i know a few carpenters...i'll see what they say, if they can do anything about it >...< But it looks like wood hardener & filler is the way forward on this one!

Talk to your carpenter mates first, wood hardener & filler isn't the ideal way by a long chalk.

If you can get hold of some old traveller timber to use as donor wood it will make the job easier and match the wood you have better than new.
