For a fair while now, each time the odometer turns over another 1,000 miles (e.g. from 30,999.9 to 31,000.0), the numbers have been getting stuck and it has often taken a considerable distance before the numbers eventually 'click' and start moving again. When they get stuck, it is characterised by the numbers 'trying' to move every 0.1 of a mile covered; but this is somehow being prevented and is exemplified by the rightmost digit on the odomter beginning to turn (as it should) before an audible 'click' is heard, accompanied by a jump of the speedo needle. Since covering an estimated 100 miles at least since the last episode without it self-fixing, I am now in the situation where the odomoter is refusing to budge from 30,999.9 to 31,000.0.
I disconnected the speedo cable today and tried to remove the odomoter, but soon realised that this can only be removed from the front of the instrument; meaning of course that the glass has to be removed as well.
I have a 1968 Minor with a black speedo.
Any ideas for helping me fix it or what might be the cause?
Cheers,
Ryan

Re: Odometer problems
Hi similer thing happened to me some 6 months ago, checked the cable, cable freid, changed the cable still the same ,removed clock took the clock apart, easy to do just prise back the three or four tabs of the chrome surround and the cover comes off and so does the glass, gently pull the needle off, undo the two small screws on the face by the serial no. and off comes the black face. you are now faced with the gubbins of the odometer, when i looked at mine [mines a 69 model],the mile wheel had a small piece broken off which had fouled the workings rendering the unit knackered so i had to purchase a recon. unit from ESM exchange price was £45 with a twelve month garrentee hpoe this helps

Re: Odometer problems
pps taking it for granted you,ve removed the clock from the dash thats another easy job just two screws hold it in place accessed via the glove box one each side and then just ease out and undo the speedo cable and electrical conections noting what goes where for replaceing

Re: Odometer problems
I do hope it doesn't require a new one altogther - thank you for that PDF guide as it's helped a lot - although as with anything I won't truly understand it until I have a go myself. I might therefore try and buy a cheap second-hand one from an autojumble and suss that out first before trying on the real thing - as it looks as though the mechanism's quite delicate and you could render it useless if tackled like a bull in a china shop!
Thanks for help so far.

Re: Odometer problems
It's almost certainly beyond repair - as once they 'jam' the damage is done to the drive gear. Plenty of replacements available out there for very little money.......... You can try a little light oil - but I wouldn't hold out much hope.

Re: Odometer problems
Complete working speedo from ebay.......Try not to pay more than £5!! If you have any plans to change the final drive ratio - this is the chance to get a matching speedo!
