how do YOU fit an exhaust ??

hiya

ok i give up, i bought a new exhaust but i had such a job trying to get in place i had to leave it, it was getting pretty late and the gnats were biting and driving me mad ...

anybody got any tips ? i only just about got the old one off cos a piece was rotten, how do you get it over the axle AND into the engine compartment ?

I assume you have the single piece steel one Grainger, if I remember (it was some years ago) you need the nearside rear jacked up with the axle hanging to get it in, but i confess that last time I did it I used a 2 piece system similar to the stainless system which is much easier to fit.

Jack the car up at the back under the bodywork to move the axle away from the body which gixes you a few more mm.
Then stick a long round bar (like a socket set extension) in the front end and use a load of elbow grease to pull the front end round into the engine bay.

thanks ... so you both reckon ive got to get the back corner up as high as possible and get the back end in first ? ... well it gives me something to do over the weekend !!

i cant finish putting the engine back together till i get a new stud for the thermostat housing anyway, so it looks like the middle of next week before its back on the road ... gives me time to wrestle with the exhaust and check over everything else i might have forgotten !

yes - back end in first then wrestle with it.
Some exhausts are worse than others and some cars are worse than others.
My first Minor was a nightmare and one time I ended up disconnecting the rear leaf and jacking the car up away from the axle to get the exhaust back enough however that was a one off and normally can be done as I described above.

hi ray

yes i think it may end up being more practical to take the spring off !!! this new exhaust seems to have a slightly upwards pointing back end to it, that is going to be a bugger. it was too nice to struggle with it today so i cut the grass instead ! ...

I don't like to struggle if I can help it. The last time I fitted a standard one peice exhaust was just after I got my first, on the road moggie, I cut it in half, found a peice of tube that was slightly larger to weld on to one bit, cut 2 slots on bit that was left and made a nice joiner, easy. then I took it all off a few months later to fit a decent powerflow exhaust, sounds much better now. I've just finished making my own (with a little help from a good friend) a pure stainless steel systems for my van, boy that does look good all polished up, shame nobody see's it under there.

hurray, i got it in ... it didnt take much struggling really, with her back leg cocked up in the air, it only took a couple of shuffles to get the exhaust in place. bend facing the wheel, then tug the whole thing from behind and the front went in with no force involved.

very smart, cant wait to hear it !
