wheelbox or wiper motor?

Post by pamhart »

Could anyone help please?
My old wiper motor died and was replaced with a second hand one - but the wiperblades now sweep too wide and go off the side of the wind screen.
What should I do? Do I need new wheel boxes or can I change something in the motor? (I've a 62 Traveller)
Thanks

The gear wheel in your "new" wiper motor is the wrong size. You can remove the gear wheel from the old motor and place it in the new one: Remove motor from car *I know the three small mounting bolts are a pain, but there's no other way). You will already have removed the cover in order to disconnect the rack, so look at the big gear wheel. You'll see a number marked on it. Your old one will probably be 150 degrees, the "new" one will be higher. The gear wheel is on a spindle that passes right through the motor. Turn the motor over and remove the circlip from the spindle. The gear wheel and shaft now slide out. Replace with your old one, refit the circlip, and put the whole lot back on the car.

There are different styles of wiper box, and those currently on sale sweep a lot less than the standard ones, but as you haven't disturbed the boxes, they should be OK, and you need to fix the motor.
