Not wishing to doubt you, but 1.5 inches is one hell of a gap

It's more usual for the hinges to drop and then get a slight overlap which makes it difficult to shut. Each of the four hinges is unique, ie top left, bottom left, top right, bottom right, so if they've been off and put back on, then the doors will be out of line. Identification isn't easy, the best thing is to be next to a Traveller with good doors and then work out which hinges on your look wrong.
It would be worth investing in a hinge repair kit (bearing, spring, nut and bolt, it makes alignment better. An even worse thought is that someone has already taken the hinges apart and put the wrong halves back together.
As I say, find a good Traveller and compare to see where yours are wrong. You could even measure the doors just in case someone got too keen with the sander!
