Re: Cut out 3 Times
take it out and run it till it cuts out switch off don't try to start it take the top off the casb there are three screws lift the top off and see if theres any petrol in the carb float chamber.I suspect that the float needle is sticking and not letting petrol into the carb,if it is then could be grit ,or float valve needs cleaning up or changing
Re: Cut out 3 Times
You didn't tell us about the pump clicking etc - it IS the pump then that's faulty - clean the points, and order a new set. Fit them when they arrive!

Sorry to correct you Roy but if you read my first post on this topic you will clearly see that I did mention the pump clicking faster than normal.
I cleaned the points this evening, took the car for a 10 mile or so run ,and it didnt cut out once, I hope thats the end of the problem.

Re: Cut out 3 Times
That would be a slight oversight on my part then, I just took it for granted when I said The pump clicks faster than before after the engine dies and when it is switched back on again, that this ment it had stopped clicking.
Re: Cut out 3 Times
don't fret too much about it,everyones wise with hindsight, well done for sorting it. The reason the pumps was clicking rapidly was because it had stuck and when starting up again, it was filling up the carb, You now know how to set the carb as well so good result , cheers

Re: Cut out 3 Times
Well I thought I had described everything properly as it was happening! I did mention about the pump clicking faster than normal on more than 1 occaision. The more experienced I thought could have picked up in this!

Re: Cut out 3 Times
I got a new set of points for the fuel pump yesterday, and I was reading my Haynes manual, it says you need to take the pump apart to fit the points, can someone explain to me how to fit the points properly to make sure the pump works.
I thought it was a matter of removing the cover off the end of the pump and twisting them on that way.
So can someone talk me through it please, I need to get the car going for tomorow, my other car is going in for a service and to get the timing belt replaced, so I need the minor for my wife to be able to pick the kids up from school.
Thanks Mark

Re: Cut out 3 Times
I forgot to post the link to the point setting instructions, so here they are.

I fitted the pump and it started clicking, but now the car wont start I ran the battery flat trying to start it.
I think I need to rotate the diaphragm some more so that wear on the points dont affect the pump working.
I need to rotate it 4 holes anti clockwise from when the rocker just starts to operate (according to the manual.)

Re: Cut out 3 Times
Is it pumping fuel ? Try it into a container - should pump ~ 1 pint in a minute. If it's clicking - it should be pumping - unless there is an airleak on the inlet side.

Re: Cut out 3 Times
I took the pump off and apart again, and I turned the diaphragm 4 holes anti clockwise, and it is now working a treat, took the car for a 6 mile spin and it seems really smooth.
Fingers crossed!
