Does this sound like a worn clutch to you?

Post by _h_____ »

Ok, so having fixed the alternator, I now have a grating noise/squeal when fully depressing the clutch. I have adjusted the clutch linkage up so that the bite point is much higher (it was very low). This has made the gearchange smooth, but still if the clutch is depressed to the floor (no longer neccessary to change gear) then I get a strong grating sound. The clutch has done about 30,000miles and has been used instead of a hand brake for quite a long time too, so has taken some abuse.

The car is a 1275 with a ford type 9 5 spd box. I should also mention that the clutch is not slipping and pulls fine.

Car is going into the garage at the end of the week for some other work. I am struggling to keep up with all the work!!!

Thanks in advance!

Yes - the 1098 clutch cover suffers from a grating sound when you overtravel the release lever - mine is the same but slackening it a bit just gives clutch drag. I'm not sure how much longer they last after you start getting the grating noise

You shouldn't hold a car on hills using the clutch - that's a sure fire way to shorten clutch life drastically.

Thanks Ray, will have to get it changed then rather than wait. As for holding car on clutch, try explaining that to my wife, who finds it too hard to pull the handbrake on. My view is I would rather change the clutch frequently than not have the car!

I could, but I'm not sure she's appreciate it  - with tact like mine being single is not such a bad idea ;-)
