Continuous insurance enforcement
I am concerned about the newly introduced 'continuous insurance enforcement' scheme soon coming into effct. I have two vehicles undergoing restoration, one is a direct import from the USA and has never been registered in fact it has'nt even got a number plate allocated to it yet so I would think this one is out of the ring. However my old traveller has previouly been registered although has not been on the road for over five years and has not had insurance cover. At the moment the car is just a shell and I am wondering what powers the government have regarding enforcement of insuring such a vehicle. I did try to get insurance cover for my other vehicle as it is fairly valuable even in it's immobile state. It is a Porsche 356 with a nominal value of 20-25K but the only cover offered was basically a 3rd party insurance and not specifically just garage cover. Any info concerning this, I think, pretty sneaky deal by the government would be appreciated.

I think you're OK if it's SORNed and kept off the road (which it should be anyway if it's not taxed).

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

Under the continuous insurance scheme, which I think is due to be introduced in April, all vehicles with current road tax will be checked against insurance databases. If it appears that your vehicle is taxed but uninsured and not declared SORN you will be sent a letter to clarify the position. If you have valid insurance you should provide the details to DVLA. If not you will need to make a SORN declaration if the car is off road or get insurance if it is on the road. A penalty is only considered if you ignore the letter and take no action. It's part of a crackdown on the huge numbers of uninsured vehicles that are being driven on the roads at the moment. Full details about the scheme are available on the DVLA website if you need further clarification.
If your car is not taxed, is off road and on SORN the continuous insurance scheme won't affect you. If your car is taxed and either insured or on SORN the scheme won't affect you either. Anything which helps to keep uninsured drivers off the road is a good thing in my view, not "a pretty sneaky deal"

Mine too, but all this new law is likely to do is make things awkward for us law abiding folk.Anything which helps to keep uninsured drivers off the road is a good thing in my view
People who habitually break the law don't bother even keeping count of how many laws so another one wont stop them.

Hello Ignatzcatz,
you need to SORN your second car, the first doesn't matter. Then this legislation will not affect you.

Gosh that's a relief, thanks folks, I had visions of the blue meanies battering down my garage door and heaving my beasts into their mobile crusher just like the bin men do to with the garbage. I shall sorn the old boat pronto.
