have i made it worse?

Post by markthe45king »

Long story made short - new clutch / new carb / new air filter - but somehow lily b feels well, worse....

So diagnose where the following may have arisen from please (i suspect weirdness with the new carb);

She used to start first time but hasn't started without choke since the work
she feels juddery in 4th between 30 and 40 (i accept that she maybe should be in 3rd, but before the clutch change she was fine in 4th at these speeds)
there is virtually no acceleration between 60 and 70 - please don't tell me that's too fast, before the work acceleration was ok and she sat at 75, now acceleration between 60 and 70 is scarily lacking, we are talking minutes, before you could pull out to overtake safely in fast moving traffic
the petrol pump sound like it's going mental

on the plus side, she doesn't now die in traffic jams

i am obviously going to take her back to where the work was done, but as the clutch was an emergency i am many miles from there and need to get back, so any tweaks to sort out the issues for the long drive?

thanks as ever.

Well the petrol pump is the red flag. Sounds like you are getting air in on the suction side. That's where I'd start looking!

get them to check the float level ,bet it's too low ,thats why the pump is working hard and lack of power since the petrol level in the carb is too low.

Why would low float level make the pump work hard! But as above it could be an air leak causing the pump to struggle - and the engine to run short of fuel when working hard. Unless the clutch is slipping - you can't blame any of this on it! Is there ~ 3/4" free play at the pedal? Why did you fit another carb - and what needle is in it ? You should need the choke to start the engine - nothing wrong there. After a decent run - what colour are the spark plugs ?

the clutch is brand new - in itself that is scary enough - i had got used to the old clutch which had begun to bite somewhere just after taking your foot back off it, so actually a fully functioning clutch with proper play is a treat; but i am having to alter my driving style back to normal!! So it's not the clutch.

The petrol pump had sounded busy before, but it hadn't affected the performance in the way it feels compromised now, hence assuming it may be the carb. But what has been said makes sense about petrol pumping affecting the performance so i will have a look at the pump - though that's relatively new too. I didn't change the carb - the garage did it for free.......

i haven't looked at the plugs colour wise - what should i be looking for? and really about the choke? she has never needed choke before except in the deepest midwinter....

You need to know what needle is in the carb - it mat be completely unsuitable for your engine. And -does the float bowl appear to be vertical?

ok she was really doing well, and then.......

what do you call the female butterfly screw that holds the air filter case on? well somehow that fell out! so now it's all held together by gaffa tape. If someone can tell me what that screw is called, i'll be ordering a new one!

probably an air filter housing retaining screw - or something along those lines!
