Engine Number plate

Hi everyone.
Had my 948 bock recently restored etc, but for some unknown reason the engine number plate (the one by the dynamo) was taken off and mislaid. I don't know why they removed it. Company claim it was when they degreased and shotblasted the external paintwork.
However, the bottom line is it is lost.
Does anyone know of anyone who can still produce the proper engine number strip. I could make one, but the original s are punched from the underside to make the letters & numbers stand proud.
Any help would be appreciated as I am trying to restore to concours!

Bull Motif sell the blanks but I dont know if they can get them stamped for you or not.

They usually remove the engine number (plate) if the surface of the block is skimmed.

I think the plates are available from most of the Minor parts suppliers.

sometimes they just remove the plate during cleaning in case they might want to skim the block later on. I had the same problem of a missing engine number after engine machining and it is upsetting.

yup, ours doesn't have a number on after it was bored out.

cam sorry. do the top of blocks get skimmed? piston will be getting close.
i found that engine plates are removed for reboring. the device sits on the flat surface of the block, and plate gets in the way

skimming the top of the block isn't very common on moggie engines (ie it is rarely needed) but I had one done just for good luck as I was doing the crank, little ends pistons and rebore at the same time and for an extra £10, I figured go fo it.

It's a fair point though - they probably do remove the number if the plate will foul with the reboring m/c!

I have found that a fine skim is often done to make sure that the top of the block if perfectly true.

Of course it depends on what engine machining place you go to................... and also what you specify.

I specified that they refit it - he said ok, but when I collected it he said he couldn't find any rivets

it can be tricky to get whats left of the rivets out of the block

In my experience most of them don't bother they just chop the heads off and leave the rest in place. They leave you to do it!!!

My engine number was stamped ONTO the block face under where the original tag was, but that method is no good for concours!

Any half decent engine rebuilder will skim the top of the block
before reboring it. You should be able to tell by the fact that
the special'rivets' which held the engine number plate will have
been sheared off leaving the ends still in the block. If the two
holes are empty then someone had removed the plate for
whatever reason??? These are not rivets,they are splined studs
with a gentle twist on them. Once you start them moving then
they just pop out.
