Clicking Noise

Post by SvMinor »

Hi all when I turn the key in the ignition there is a clicking sound coming from the engine, it seems to be the fuel pump,is this normal has anyone any advice?.
also when the engine is running and the headlights are on the red ignition light seems to be lit, although when the headlights are switched off the light goes off,I think its just the glow from the headlights

Yes, the fuel pump should be clicking or else you ain't getting any fuel pumped. Does the ign light go out when you rev the engine? What voltage reading are you getting across the battery?

Probably just light from the speedo illumination shining through the red lens. Is it still 'glowing' if you switch off the panel lights ?

I dunno what the voltage is,dunno how to do that,if the lights are off and I rev the engine the ignition light goes out,I think its some sort of faulty wiring, because if I was driving during the day the light would be off but when I switch on the headlights it comes back on.

OK so try swithching off the panel lights but leaving the headlights on (as Roy says) If the light still glows when you have headlights on and engine is revving then the dynamo is not putting out enough charge or the regulator needs adjusting.

If it's clicking constantly you've probably run out of petrol.

If it doesn't work, you're not hitting it with a big enough hammer.

i had the same problem as the o/p, turned out to be the dynamo, or in my case alternator was slipping. try turning the dynamo pully with yoru hand, if it moves, time for a new fanbelt. if not, then wiring must be the culprit, possibly the regulator..... though the regulators been pretty much removed in my car the amount of electrical bodgery thats present. good job its getting ripped apart in a few months eh? =/ . ofcourse the easiest way to find out would be with a multimeter.

i like you! your car seems as problematic as mine =], i was however refering to the original thread, your problem will have nothign to do with the alternator!

that being said ive never broken downanywhere yet , other than at home!
