conrods again

my quest for conrods continues, so bearing in mind that most A series conrods where the same (except the one with the pinch bolt at the top)
would these conrods fit my 1098?

NO! Surely you can find the caps for your own rods - you should have kept them WITH each rod as ypou took them off..... They must be used in a set of rod + cap.

nope, no caps. all gone.

i had the whole shed out layed out on the lawn/drive way looking for them, so with the exception a lovely clean well ordered shed, no conrod caps

to re-inforce the 'NO', the ones you have found are for a larger diameter big end, that is another variation in a-series con-rods!

amazing how the easiest things in life go completely to pot.

so, considering esm, bull and i object to paying nearly £50 for one from moss, where else can one get a new set of con rods from that dont cost a third of a new engine for a set of them?

Why don't you just get a donor engine? Old 1098's are pretty common... I've bought a couple of perfectly reasonable 948 engines in the past, which have run in my cars for years from my local Minor specialist for around £100, so I'm sure you'd get a worn out one (with good conrods!) for a lot less than that.

Yes - you just need a clapped out 1098 engine - or indeed an early 998 Mini engine, These are often given away free - I did just that a few years ago..........

also has the rods for sale. I'll leave you to negotiate with him - obviously they are only any good to you if they fit pistons with circlips - so make sure of that before buying. I suggest £10 plus post for the set of 4 would get the deal - he wasn't even advertising them -so a sale will be a bonus for him.........

ah ha, did a bit more rummaging in the shed today and looked in the last box that i hadnt looked in before, and hey presto 4 lovely conrod caps.

so, now i have a set of conrods but mis matching caps. so how does one know which cap does with which conrod?

check them carefully for any numbering, be it actual numbers or just dots. you may not have numbered them, but somebody else may have once!

failing that i can only imagine trial and error. they should turn pretty freely without binding. you will probably find that they bolt up but don't turn, if that's the case, you've got the wrong cap!

Bolt the cap to the rod and make sure that it fits perfectly with no ridge between the two.

Exactly - don't try them with shells on the shaft UNTIL you are SURE they are matched to the rods..... or you may damage the shells. The caps may have dots punched on them And note the notches go together..........
