conrods

Post by cadetchris »

having just bought a nos set of conrods for primrose, i have discovered upon opening the parcel that they have the pinchbolt at the top of the conrod, after a little research on esm's website, i discovered that are for a 948cc and not the 1098cc lump currently in the car.

can i still use these in my 1098?

Don't think so - although some early 1098 engines did have these ghastly conrods. Send them back !

If sold to you as for a 1098 engine -then they should take them back........ You should run any prospective buys like that past some others first........

I would be trying hard to return them to the seller - because they don't fit your Morris Minor. Telll them they are for an 848 Mini engine (which they are) and not suitable for a Minor engine. You will never sell them......

Fudge, well yet another lesson learnt. Ill email the seller tomorrow and maybe he will take them back, but if not ill stick them on ebay and if they dont sell, they will join the growing pile of ebay failures i am amassing

I may have missed something but if the 948 and 1098 engines have different strokes then surely the conrods are different lengths or are the blocks different heights?

nope the difference is in the pistons, their distance between crown and gudgeon pin.

Yes - all the many different A series con rods are the same length - EXCEPT the 970 S rods which are slightly longer. Hard to spot - because they have the same part number cast on them as all the other S rods!!

Thanks for that, piston crown to gudgeon pin was the other option I should have though of.
It makes stock handling easier, like the s/v WD engine was never rebored, just re-sleeved back to standard to save stocking different pistons

so to clarify, these conrods i have, with the pinch bolt at the top instead of the usual bearing, wont fit/work properly on my 1098?

Correct - they will work in most 848 engines, all 948 engines and some v early 1098 engines. The point is - the gudgeon pins to go with these rods are different.
