1968 morris minor horn not working

hi there, still trying to get her up to spec for the mot man, anyone know how the horn push comes out, does it screw out or pull out? i tried to screw it out anti-clockwise and no joy. tried some wd40 in there to clean up the contacts, no joy. she's bakerlite so i am trying to be careful with her. anyone nearby who can help with this?

It just levers out, if your finger nails aren't up to it a screwdriver worked around the edge will do the trick.

a ha, there's this little empty tab bit on the red button push, should i try lever it out from that?

No - don't try to remove the red button push as you might not be able to get it back together again! Here's a pic of the horn push - it levers out from the side edge (black bakelite) and comes out in one piece:[frame][/frame]

Have you got a workshop manual you can refer to? It might be worth investing in one. Are you sure it's the button that's the problem and not a loose connection?

ah thanks, i see where i have to work it around from now. i do have a haynes i have to find it. erm, loose connection, any other connections to check out? :S

Also check to see if a fuse has blown and check the actual horn (in the engine bay) to see if the conections are all ok.

ah ok, i feel a bit better about solving this now. thanks for this. will give the haynes a read too.

ps would i be right in thinking that if the internal cabin light works that the horn fuse is ok?

Have you got the later 2 spoke steering wheel or has it been swapped for the earlier 3 spoke which a lot of people prefer?

from what i can remember i think it's a three spoke wheel.

also, i was wondering where the horn is located in the engine bay, haynes doesn't seem to refer to this or give any pictures?

just one more thing, the contacts for the horn, how many contacts are there en route to powering it, and wires, and where are they roughly located? i have a multimeter, what am i testing for en route to the horn? 12v? many thanks.

There's a wiring diagram at the top of the electrical section-worth keeping a copy in the car.
The original manual is better than the Haynes "HBOL".

yes, this engine bay is sweet. he has the old horn, i had that i say had cuz i have taken it out. one of the spades broke as i took off the connectors. i tried to test with a car battery charger. i pressed on the alligators to a remaining spade and the remeains of a spade, but it might be insulated due to the paint, should i shave some paint off and try it again? personally how could i mend a broken spade, solder?

please advise. i think the old horn is maybe the problem, might get a newie from esm! could i test it with a multimeter, if so what do i click it to?

Battery charger won't have enough power - doubt you can fix the spade. New horns are dead cheap.

bmc this horn i have is ancient, i would say it's the reason for no horn workage.

i also discovered the joys of sealed beams today. it took ages to get the 'knack' to sort out the bezels on the outside, and putting the screw back in. however there's a bit of rustage to the inner bits, i think i need new surrounds or at least rubbers.

what's the best to go for, halogens, sealed beams or ones that allow bulbage?

Evenin' all.

This is my first posting, and I hope it will help. My horn failed today, having replaced the flasher relay and the indicator stalk.
It took a while to trace it to the slip ring on the steering column. Ease out the horn button with a screwdriver. Remove the steering wheel. The brass slip ring is there in all its beauty for you to ponder. Have a cup of tea, then with a small screwdriver gently prize in behind the larger of the upper ring. This apperars to be placcy and stretched a tad, but, you can then remove all the slip ring bits. I found that the sprung contact on the inside of the slip rig had jammed in its hole due to the plastic top hat in the spring having broken and slipped down the hole. Simple pimple to rectify, took a while to find. Hope this is of some help to you.
