Re: Pick up Restoration (Part 2)
part of the way there, need to get some more heat on this nut that has 90% rusted away, problem there, I may end up drilling it out and picking out the thread.[frame]

Re: Pick up Restoration (Part 2)
Another way of getting those rusty bits out is grind the rusty lump to shiny metal, then build up a snot with mig welding, file or grind some flats and either use a socket, mole grips or my personal favourite for this job- Irwin bolt grips.
The intense heat from the mig welding will loosen the threads on the rusty unions and if you mig weld in bursts, allowing it to cool between each weld then you will not melt the brass (900- 940C melting point) especially if the union is clamped in a vice to act as a heat sink.

Cheers John - all comments IMHO

Re: Pick up Restoration (Part 2)
still waiting for pouring rain free day to take up John's Idea of welding a "snot" onto this union so I can unscrew it, miss weather woman says there's no let-up yet so Ive been into my garage to look at the "big bit" and this has increased my misunderstanding. The rear axle through the gap in the floor/bed, you can see the handbrake bits that are due to be stripped off and scrapped, the rear flexible hose and the union centred on the diff leading to the rear cylinders. All due to be condemed to the scrap bin. appart from the unions of course...

Re: Pick up Restoration (Part 2)
the union Ive managed to strip down from the gash bin, and also from the original decayed hulk I called the pickup relic, this when compared to the one on the basket case axle appears to match..[frame]

Re: Pick up Restoration (Part 2)
so where does this one on the left go? its due to be stripped down further with a snot of weld, it did hold a electrical connector for the brake stop light, so it must go at the rear. Anyone shed some light?

David
Thats the front brake pipe union and brake switch union. The bolt at the bottom goes through the engine bay floor at the front drivers side.

Re: Pick up Restoration (Part 2)
the original brass unions cleaned up easily with a fine wire brush, here they are ready for further service. I'll put these in the box with the other brake parts to await assembly.[frame]

Re: Pick up Restoration (Part 2)
GREAT! This tip works because : 1) the snot gives you something to garb hold of firmly with mole grips or bolt grips and 2) the heat from the mig welding breaks the bond between rust and alloy piece.davidmiles wrote:well success at last, there's some great advice from you guys, I welded a "snot" and out came the old screw thread.[frame][/frame]

Re: Pick up Restoration (Part 2)
nice relevent shot there, thank you mr Harris, I was down between the rear wheels checking out how to dismantle the old handbrake cables and the pipes,( rather need to get some rust prevention on my leaf springs before they get any worse.)
Most will come free with the rear brake backing plates, when I dismantle them later on, the only stubborn bolt I need to undo from this side are the axle to handbrake cable fixings.

Re: Pick up Restoration (Part 2)
a check of the new brake parts reveals a lot about how to undo these old connections[frame]

Great to see someone restoring one for the love of it and to save a moggy. Best of luck with it.

Re: Pick up Restoration (Part 2)
the rear brass banjo was in good shape so that was wire brushed and kept with the new piston[frame]
