i am toying with the idea of disc brakes, just a case of getting them, but not to fussed if i get them or not.

Then absolutely hold on to the servo...but I see no reason to have it in the car while you retain the drums.
Of course, one could fill many thick tomes with all the things I do not see.

humm. well i am going to shift the thing, its doing my nut in where it currently is, its probably not doing the carb and air filter any good by rattling off the servo.

remove servo, and if you decide to put discs on, then find a place then. right now it's pointless. fit Wolesley 9inch drums on front if you are concerned about stopping

excellent, job for tomorrow, out it comes, in the shed it goes and it means i can have a fettle in the engine bay without being hindered. so, slight problem now. what do i do with the little pipe into the inlet manifold? i cannot leave it uncapped as it will really mess up the mixture

A cork ? Anything that snuggly fits the hose........ or get the correct plug for the manifold - 5/8" UNF I "think".

you could always run a bit of pipe of the manifold and put a spark plug in the end of the pipe.. not my idea the person that fitted the fiat engine to a car I purchased did it..

well my first thought the other day was to rip out the whole 3 branch exhaust (and the servo) and replace the lovely original exhaust and manifold. but alas, i dont have these original bits any more, so ill stick with the 3 branch and whipp off the servo when dad isnt looking

Disconnect and block off the vacuum hose, then drive the car.
Then make a decision.
You will need to recalibrate your leg for the difference without a servo, so will your dad if he drives the car.

well having disconnected the vacuum pipe from the servo and blocked it, then given primrose a spin, the overall consensus is ill keep the servo, but just relocate it within the engine bay. i knew the brakes in original condition where a little vague, but good god, it takes twice as long to stop and even then you need thighs of steel to pull the car up to a junction.

Really? This surprises me. But, hey, trust your experience -- I never put much stock in the 'lying eyes' argument.

i was truely shocked at the sheer effort it took to stop. i have owned and driven many cars older than my '69 morris 1000, but dear god it took some effort.

Something sadly wrong with your brakes then......... Standard drum brakes DO NOT need high pedal force.

it it be the way they are piped up? the pipes goes from the side of the master cylinder, through the servo to a T junction. left goes to left front brake, right goes to another T junction, where straight on goes to front right brake and the remaining off shoot goes to the rear brakes.

That's all ok - so unless keeping the non-functioning servo in the circuit somehow increases the pedal load (can't see how it would) I still feel your brakes are not in good shape!
