An infuriating discovery

Post by rsawatson »

Just got back from being on a milk round all night, and have had the misfortune to discover that some little sh*t has ripped one of my mirrors off and, in the process, completely shattered the glass of my driver's side quarterlight. It makes me so unbelievably cross :x to think about it it's unreal. I know that if I'd caught them doing it, I probably would have taken to doing something rash, or something which I'd later regret...

It looks like I'm going to have to buy a whole new quarterlight, at a cost of around £50 - which I can't really afford :x . Any idea if it's possible/practicable to just replace the pane of glass?

Sorry to go off on a rant, and thanks in advance.

sorry just seen it is pick up only.

Good news (well better news) you can just replace the glass.

Now its broken you can dig all the bits out of the rubber seal. If the seal looks ok you just push the replacement glass in and thats all there is to it. It's a tight fit and that's all that holds it in.

The problem is getting the glass out of the donner quarter-light. I soaked it in Plus Gas penetrating oil and then pulled it out.

What ever you do do, don't even think of trying to replace the whole assembly - the lock has to come out and even then it's a horrible job.

Put a note in the wanted section. I'm sure someone here will have a glass for you in this season of goodwill.

Sorry to hear of the problem. If you can get hold of a second-hand quarter light then it's a lot easier (in my experience) to paint the metal to the required colour (assuming that we're talking saloon and not stainless frame) than it is to change the glass. Fitting is simple: Two small screws on top of the frame allow you to remove the top hinge and then the assembly just pulls out. refitting straightforward reversal of process. Good hunting.

often,(when the parts market picks up) quarter light glass comes up on eBay. at the moment ebay is a bit dim for parts, but roll on january, i'm sure something will come up.

luckily i am in a quite peaceful area and daisy live in the garage, so hopefully i might escape the vandilism. Still it is bang out of order! what i don't get is why idots do these thing, its not like we have done anything to our cars. leave us to happy minoring!

I'm pretty sure I have a painted quarter light with intact glass in the attic among my stash of spares. I can send it to you for a small fee plus postage. If I was employed then I'd let you have it for just postage, but times are hard!

if you're replacing the entire quarterlight (provIded the hinge screws come out replacing the wentire unit is much easier than replacing the glass) then the quarterlights on all 4door saloons and all travellers had a stainless steel suround.

The stainless ones don't rust and won't need painting, although not original, a lot of people prefer them.

I always found that the mild steel quarterlight trapped water and rusted. I've changed over to stainless steel which I painted to blend in. Needs a special primer or the paint'll peel but I've always seen quarterlights in s/s at about the same price (£5-15) as mild steel at the National. If you aren't sorted by someone on here keep an eye on Ebay.

Don't let them get you down. Onwards and upwards

Sorry to hear about your quarterlight. Glad to see you're sorting it out.

Still looking for an old grey roof rack mount rubber, I have some bits, and bobs I can donate to the club,or a little club fund raising.
