Removing speedo drive from g'box

Post by MikeNash »

Dear all,
I'm replacing my 1098 engine (with one bought from the Sage of Stonehouse) and I'm trying to get the speedo drive disconnected from the gearbox. (I'm going to lift the engine and 'box out together.) The short knurled cylindrical nut on the drive at the 'box is undone but I can't get the drive cable out. Does it just pull out or should the larger plastic fitting that's in the box and to which the knurled is screwed also come out?
Thanks in advance, MikeN.

Hi,
Just removed my gearbox and speedo cable just pulled out once the nut was removed.

Well, alas, it didn't "pop out" so I've disconnected it at the speedo end and tied the drive to the engine so I can take it all out and get at it more easily when the engine's out. At the speedometer end the cable drive is pressed into a squre section - is the g'box end the same? No "spade" drive or anything like that?
Regards, MikeN.

The gearbox end is also a square section. It is possible for rust to happen in there and could cause the separation difficulties. If the cable is disconnected at the other end then the gearbox drive mechanism, big plastic thing, could be unscrewed from the gearbox complete with the cable. Drain the gearbox oil first as it will leak from there.

Thanks Roni,
With the engine and 'box out I'll be able to give more controlled and straighter tug or dismantle it further as you mention. Taa, MikeN.

If you do find it is rusty, check to see where the water is coming from. On mine it was from a "helpful" welder who was welding next to the cable without shielding or moving it and so burnt through the outer case.

It just pulls out - better get a new inner cable 'in stock'!
