Rocker Cover refurb and fitting

Hi all,
As the winter is setting in Ivy is tucked away for her first scottish winter. I'm taking the opportunity to spruce up the engine bit by bit until i get more confident. I have removed the rocker cover and old heavily cracked and compressed cork gasket. The cover has been bead blasted, degreased and is being resprayed with heat resistant enamel. I have a new gasket, name plates etc to fit when it comes back. Does the gasket require a sealant on refitting? I have black silicone would that be ok if so? DOes it need sealing ontop of the head or just between the gasket and cover??

Without reading the other thread - the way to do it is to GLUE the gasket to the cover - with clear glue (so it doesn't show) - and no sealant between the gasket and head. This way you can take the cover off without ruining the gasket.

Chris,

Clear silicone sealant or 'instant gasket' between the rocker cover and the gasket, and then a smear of grease on the other side of the gasket that meets the head face. The grease will stop the gasket sticking to the head, which means it can be used a number of times for tappets etc. Works a treat!!

Works well, you need to keep an eye on on the back where it can catch up on the heater valve when removing and replacing the cover.

Well after a little delay the cover is ready to go back on (once the silicone has set overnight...)



I think it looks pretty good and should make a difference in the bay... Airfilter housing has been powder coated black as well...

Actually, the paint and powdercoat was a called in favour from my father who runs an engineering company. However, from experience, I would have thought it would cost around £20 incl. Black is a common colour, so won't need to be bought in. It takes seconds to do (not including baking)....
