Insurance recommendation

Post by Anna_Mavrakakis »

Hi can anyone recommend a car insurance company for me? I'm 26 and a new driver, I've had 4 years no claims with one company and yet they increased the car insurance by nearly double before they knew I was a new driver... then an additional £70 after they knew that I passed my test. I understand the £70 they increased it but nearly doubling the price is awful!

all i can say is shop around, footman james are quite good. look in the back of classic car magazines (practical classics, classic car mart etc) they have a list of insurance companies, its a case of sit down with a cup of tea, note bad and the phone ans simply ring around them.

On this subject, classic car insurance, my MGB is insured through Lancaster and expires on 23rd December. They wrote to me quoting a renewal cost quite a bit higher than this year so I shopped around online, including Lancaster, and most quotes - including theirs - were rather lower.....

I took out a new policy elsewhere to save a few pennies and rang them to cancel the renewal at which point they offered me a discount which would have brought the cost down to the same as their online quote.....

I didn't take them up on the discount and I have bought elsewhere, on principle.

beware, everyone, when your renewal comes up, shop around and don't be conned by this practice.

Maybe she was driving as a learner for 4 years? I do seem to remember hearing somewhere that someone who's just passed their test is considered a higher risk than a learner, which might explain the higher cost.

As others have suggested, get quotes from as many insurance companies as you can. The Footman James MMOC scheme seems very reasonable. You could try using a price comparison site such as gocompare, etc. Don't be surprised if they throw up some silly results though. I was getting (speculative) quotes for a Rover P4 and was quoted about £180 for fully comprehensive. Put in TPFT to see if it would be any cheaper - lowest price £7,500
