Restorer for my old Lily

Post by titch »

I took my Morris Traveller "Lily" off the road at the beginning of summer to do some needed restoration on the old girl. However as happens at times I get dumped with a work contract away from home, so now my evenings are spent in a flat and my weekends on the M1 / M25, so no time left for Lily work.

I desperately need to get the old girl done and never having had work done on a vehicle before by someone else have no idea where to start.

I live in the Ilford / Barking area of essex / east london and am looking for a company that restores Moggies in that side of the country.

Does anyone know of someone who is reliable and can restor to a good sound / safe level, Lily is not a forecourt car, but a family vehicle.

I have looked in adds etc, but they all seam to be on the West side of London - Bristol and up :(

Hi, I live very close to you but I'm afraid that there aren't any local 'Minor specialists' - you'll need to travel a fair distance to get to one. What work needs doing to your car? Does it need a full restoration eg welding, bodywork, woodwork, paint? It may be that some of the work can be carried out locally rather than at a Minor specialist so it would help if you could provide a bit more information as to what exactly needs doing.

I see from your previous posts that you are a MMOC member so take a look at the advice regarding professional restorations that is provided in every copy of Minor Matters (page 4 of the Nov/Dec issue). A professional restoration can work out very expensive so you need to make sure that you take your car to somewhere that will complete the work to a good standard. You've done the right thing by posting on here for advice as it's important to get recommendations from others who can vouch for the standard of workmanship, particularly if you're planning on having a lot of work done /spending a lot of money. Provide a bit more information about what work needs doing and I'm sure people on here will be able to point you in the right direction! :D

Though I could "get away" with doing a minimal amount I suspect that Lily has had that done to her for years and its all starting to build up for her.

Therefore I really want her check over, welding done, under sealing and a nice new paint job. I know that I do have some wood issues that need looking at.

I'm not looking at her becoming a show piece, but I want to ensure her a bit of a future and I think now is the time to get things sorted. Therefore I dont really need a Moggy specialist, but someone who can inject a bit of life into the old girl.

The closest to you that I would recommend is Ian Allen of Minor Services in Witchford near Ely, not too bad a run up the M11 and across.
