Ignition Light

Post by DaisyMayFozz »

Hello again
my ignition light is on all the time when the engine is running. when I turn ignition, light comes on, pull starter, car starts. Light still on. When driving the light is still on. it only goes off when the engine is turned off. The dynamo is producig a charge and the battery is full. all terminals are clean on the regualtor, battery dynamo and everything else. there is another thread about how an ignition light comes on when they rev. people suggested that its the regulator. is this the same for me? any advice on this would be great.

Cheers chris

Ps, this only started the other day when I was going to get some fuel in her in the rain. at first I thought it was the dampness, but it seems not. Also some of you may know that I have recently rewire the temp guage into the back of the speedo. Could this have anything to do with it??? maybe Iv knocked a wire.

How do you KNOW it is charging the battery ? And - is it a dynamo - or an alternator ? Did it start doing this right away when you wired up the temp gauge ?

If you had knocked a wire off then the light would be off all the time.
Suggest you look here to diagnose your regulator

hi
we have the dynamo. I think its charging as the battery is full and I would have thioght that it would have gone flat by now. It happened the day after I wired the temp guage, the first proper run after I wired it.
cheers

Are you saying it happened the day after? Was it okay the day you did the temp gauge? If so it could be coincidence.
Undo the wiring you did for the temp gauge and see if it cures the ign light problem.

yes it happend the day after, it was okay before we changed it. the problem with turning it back is that it then means that the guage is reading high, which is why we changed it in the first place. I shall look into it more tommorow, but there is one thing i must mention, when we re-did the temp guage, we found an extra wire. we didn't think that it did anything, and left it off. The wire was connected to the voltage stabiliser and ended at the voltage stabiliser. it seemed like it didn't do anything , maybe i need to put this back on????
any cheers for the relpys

The wires all do something! Is everything else working as it should ? Definitely the RED IGN light that is shining ??? The wiring for that is not in any way associated with the voltage stabiliser.

Right all sorted now, the ignition light bulbe holder had come out slightly and was shorting on the bodywork. This caused it to stay on all the time.

thanks for all the suggestions

Sorry - I don't swallow that one ! The IGN bulb holder casing is metal to metal in the speedo casing anyway................

It can't be plastic unless its been modified. It is a metal bulb holder to a metal speedo which is the earth path. You would have to have a separate earth otherwise. "If" it was plastic - why would that be causing your "short to the bodywork" ??

right, after forgetting to put the speedo cable bck on, I decided to have a look, it is metal, put painted black. what I meant by shorted on the bodywork was that when it falls out, and the ignition is on, it lights up. put in properley, It only lights up when its meant to. not sure why this happens, but it seems to short on the bodywork. it had a look a round, and anotheer loose wire behind the speedo, touches the bulb holder when its fallen out.. when it does this, it lights it up. the wire was yellow and i think was wired up as some sort of immobiliser at some point, there is evidence of this around the car. i have removed the yellow wire, and all is well.
sorry for the confusion chris.
