Winter Tyres

Post by youngcamper »

Hi all,

Which Tyres would be best for a morris minor on the south coast baring in mind that it rarely snows but is often in the minus degrees.

Some 145/80 mud and snows

or

Some 155/65 winter tyres although BMC said the profile would be too low.

Be careful because you can get "all season" M+S tyres, M+S does not mean they are winter tyres. Winter tyres have a softer rubber compound and have a mountain/snowflake symbol on them.

Keep your normal tyres, you are unlikely to need studded tyres
The Post office used to fit Town and Country tyres on the back wheels of their vans but they were cross plys

Blizzaks are meant to be excellent winter tyres 8)

Youngcamper - I put winter tyres (Platin Alpin RP21s) on my escort last year and they were excellent in the colder, wet conditions and brilliant in the snow.

I am getting another set of winter tyres for the car again this week, they are just better when its wet/cold!

Personally I would think so, the rolling diameter will be lower so you will be going slower for a given number of revs though

According to a tyre calculator on the interweb, the tyre diameter of 155/65/14 will be about 30mm less than a 145/80/14 so your speedo will read about 5% over what you are doing.

Ahh that doesn't sound to bad. There's nothing wrong with going slower in the winter.

30mm won't make a difference I take it?

Your 0-60 time will improve! Not only will you have slightly lower gearing, but your speedo will show 60 when you are doing 57!!
