Splitscreen leaking middle column Help

Post by EwenCameron »

Hello, I have been out in the rain today in a very heavy downpour.

My splitscreen let in a lot of water at the join of the two windows and I believe I need to replace the rubber.

It is not the rubber that goes around the window just the middle.

Problem is I can not see what the part is called on any Morris site. Please can someone advise.

Managed to dry off the car about 2 hours after the downpour and is now all covered up.

Try tightening the line of bolts in the inside central pillar.

If not successful slacken the centre pillar and try sealant between the rubber and glass. Do not disturb the glass

If I were you I'd try everything else before fitting a new rubber, its not as simple as it looks, once you take the centre section to bits the glasses are very likely to spring together making it very, and I mean very, difficult to get the new rubber and section back in place.Try slackening the nuts on the inside and pull the outer pillar out and force some sealant all the way round the gap then retighten the nuts don't overtighten or you may break the glass. If you do need to change the rubber then this is how I did it a few years ago. Remove inside nuts and plate make up strips of metal to sit across the top and bottom studs and rebolt these to hold the outer and old rubber in place. Then cut out the centre section of the rubber with a stanley knife.I then used strips of that plastic packaging tape that you get on large parcels fed it through the centre gap (each side) round the outer window frame and then twisted it to tension it to hold the glasses out and prevent then slipping together.then took out the rest of the centre section fitted outer and inner with the bolts lightly screwed up then pulled the tape out and fully tightened the nuts.Good luck with it

Heres the part on ESM but currently out of stock

It would be worth phoning some of the other suppliers, perhaps Tom Roy or Minor Developments?

If you decide to go down the "sealant" route.....

I have used silicone GREASE to good effect on windshield rubbers, lift the edge of the rubber gently & insert a syringe of the grease, running along the edge.
Clean any off the glass.
