Steering arms

Post by vanless »

Hi

I have posted a wanted post for some van steering arms, but after looking at the difference between a van swivel pin and a standard swivel pin I am wondering if there is any point to fitting van pins. The steering arm may be larger but the hole in the pin is also larger which would surely make the pin weaker.
Does anyone out there have any thoughts on the pros and cons of the two types of arm/pin.

Many thanks in advance

Only the later 'heavy duty' vans had the heavier steering arms - I'm guessing hard to find now. So if your van is being used only for 'light' duty - just use normal swivel pins and steering arms.

I'm glad someone else has had the same thoughts as me regarding the steering arms! I am using the larger ones but before I did this I felt that the larger hole in the swivel pin rather defeated the object, the hole is ofter machined slightly off centre which makes matters worse ( the surounding metal one side can get pretty thin!) However I convinced myself that being a mod, apparently for post office vans, that it was acceptable, but remain doubtful that it is any stronger as a unit. I've not heard of the smaller ones breaking.

It is indeed hard to imagine why they thought this was necessary! Or indeed - why they thought it was any stronger!!

Hi

Many thanks to bmcecosse and Les for their replies.
I have decided to fit the standard car pins as a mechanical engineer friend of mine said that the larger steering arm mod was silly...(in a John Cleese voice).
I have also fitted some poly bushes, new drums, new shoes, new cylinders.......................
Cheers
