Whats the recommended engine and gearbox oils for the 1098 engine and gearbox. The manual says S.A.E. 30 in both but I cant find a S.A.E. 30 been to Halfords and local car part spares. And what oil goes in the dashpot.
I am about to fit a new jet and needle into the carb, is the needle fitted so the shoulders are flush with the bottom of the slide it screws into and is the jet fitted flush with the inside of the carb. Then whats the best way to get the running mixture right once you have disturbed both.
I am sure I have heard mentioned self aligning tape where can I get some so I can tidy the wiring harness up for now.
Cheers

Re: Oil, carb and tape question
SAE 30 readily available in Tesco - on the gardening shelf! It's ideal for filling the dampers after you have drained off the horrible old thin/smelly oil that's in them now - unless it has all leaked away of course. Use 20W50 in the engine - ASDA/Morrisons stuff is fine. 10W40 in the gearbox - unless it's noisy/clanky in which case try the 20W50. Why change needle and jet ? But yes - needle goes shoulder level with base of the holder. The jet probably ends up 1/16" below the bridge - but is set by adjusting with the (hot) engine idling. " self aligning tape " - I like it!! Goes on nice and straight I imagine ?
Probably you mean self amalgamating tape - RS Components for sure - Maplins maybe.

Re: Oil, carb and tape question
SAE 30 is recommended in the workshop manual / handbook because modern multigrade oils had not been invented when they were published. Modern oils contain detergents to keep the insides of the engine clean and the dirt is held in suspension and trapped in the oil filter rather than gathering as a thick sludge in the bottom of the sump. Flushing the engine and dropping the sump were once part of the service schedule.

And what goes in the dashpot ? I am changing the needle and jet while everything is apart as I intend to keep the car and it might save me messing about at a later date. Its no where near concourse but I want it to be a good reliable example that I can use and not wrap up just for shows.

I wouldn't use self amalgamating tape. As the name suggests it forms into a solid rubber sleeve, which, although waterproof is very difficult to remove when you have a problem. Use cable sleeving. There are various types, see this website for details.

Re: Oil, carb and tape question
20w50 is correct for both engine & gearbox.
