Storage in shipping Container?

Hi All,

Quick Q. I've recently been offered the opportunity to store Ivy in a shipping container. Vermin free and apparently has anti condensation paint (never heard of that before). This at a cost of £100 a month... Shes's currently kept in a covered barn under her own fitted cover. The barn is open ended so has loads of air passing through. My thinking is the barn would still be the better option... do you agree??

well I used to be in construction a couple of years ago and when we wanted a container they were only about £600 to buy one, that would be plus delivery as we had our own truck with a large HIAB to collect it and site it with, thats assuming you have somewhere to site it of course.

My landlord is getting a couple for his own use and has offered me use of one.... sounds like he's on a money making scheme....

I would suggest staying as you are, the airflow will help to keep the car free from condensation and keep it dry. Any moisture within the shipping container will stay in the shipping container and it will not dry out. Anti condensation paint does sound a bit like snake oil to me (hey, I might be wrong) but it will mean that the moisture is in the atmosphere or sat under the car in a puddle - not clever really....

At work we buy old containers from a firm in Liverpool, Eagle Containers I think it is...they charge around £400 for old 40ft containers, delivered.

The barn sounds a much better bet anyway, you don't hang washing in a sealed box to dry it, however it's painted inside.

Another vote for the barn........ Would be better if you could close off the sides/ends in some way - but still allow air to circulate. £100 a month? Aye right!

i have one i think its 20 ft for £250 going spare the last one i used i put a roof on and cladding and had it as a garage safest and smartest garage ever and built like fort knox

I know a chap who had his Lotus Cortina stored in a shipping container at a farm. Some kids started a fire nearby and the fire-brigade refused to try and open the container as it might have had oxy etc inside. The Cortina was just a twisted mess by the time the fire had burnt itself out.

The barn it is then
Tis only open at one end, has a roof and three other stone walls. The opening is only garage door size..... Ivy is sharing the space with a selection of boats as well... me thinks i'm in the wrong job!!

Ant condensation paint only removes the condensation from the container walls (if it works, but there are limits!) and does nothing to prevent condensation from forming on the car.

A dry container is no bad thing - if it has some modification to allow a bit of air flow then it's basically a steel garage. For £100 a month I'd expect enough room for 2 cars at least.
However your barn sounds fine, so no reason to change.

A wet container is worse than nothing at all! We had one at work that was good and another that leaked - needless to say the stuff stored in the leaky one was usually a right mess after a few years!
