Replacing glove box inners and surrounds

Post by Goose »

After replacing the carpets in my 1964 convertible the glove box inners and surrounds looked so shabby they had to be refreshed too. One was damaged so that was my excuse!

I ordered some new ones from morrisminor.org.uk and they arrived promptly and are very smart.

The problem is I have no idea on the correct procedure for fitting them. The surround is prefixed and is quite tight so I'm not sure it is supposed to come off. As you can see from the photo, the surround is too long, I assume you cut it to length once the glove box had been fitted. As you can also see the shape is completely wrong too so I assume you have to work the surround into the corners of the glove box opening and it will then become the correct shape.

A couple too many assumptions for me, can anyone help me with something more definitive?

Cheers, Goose

The silver trim surround should fit to the edge of the (drivers side) glove box opening rather than to the liner as in your picture. You just need to push it on to fit and it's pretty flexible although it will probably need to be trimmed a bit.

To fit the glove box liner you need to remove the glove box surround by undoing the screws under the dashboard (I think there's two screws). You might find that you can't get the new liner in without removing the steering wheel first though, in which case disconnect the battery before removal.

That's a passenger side one pictured - Have you got the correct ones for your car - 64 was a changeover year. Does it have the speedo with the ally surround or is it just all painted dash?

If the back of that part is the right shape, as it appears to be, the rest will push into shape in the car. That is definitely the left side in the picture but you did buy both didn't you? There are probably 4 or 5 screws to hold it in place, see the holes in the old one. For sure it's easier if you remove the steering wheel and drop the column down a bit to get the surround off on the driver's side.

Trim (TRM549) and (TRM549A) are the fixings for the glove box - available from ESM

I have the speedo with the ally surround and yes I bought both sides. My glove boxes did have a silvery trip that was separate from the liner before so these are different. The trim is not fixable to the edge of the glove box as it doesn't have the flat surface it is simply a horseshoe cross section that snuggly fits over the cardboard end.

Perhaps these shots will help!

The liners you have are correct for your car. You just need to trim the chrome trim back to meet neatly when you have fitted them. No need to remove the trim from the liners....Your liners should fit to the outside of the recess and are screwed through into queenie clips that should be on the body.

Once one has been to Oxford and bought a hat and cravat for the outing on Sunday I'll be beautifying the old girl, don't ask about the outfit...

If it turns out to be any more than total rubbish I'll post a wee piccie! So it'll be that good I'll post a couple! ;-)

Thanks for the ideas thus far...

Er just to save later confusion you have the speedo with the painted dash, the later one with the ally surround also encompasses the switches.

Hey folks sorry to tag onto an older thread, but I have just bought new glove boxes and fixing clips, but neglected to get the screws, can anyone tell me the screw size, I would like to find them locally rather than having to get them delivered.
Thanks a lot,
Greg
