V5C shows PLG

Post by davidmiles »

My Pickup project has still got quite a long way to go, and it's slowing down due to the cold weather we're now getting. I've left the freezing garage and gone indoors to the warm and Ive turned my attention to the documents. My V5C classes my 1968 Morris 1000 pickup as a Private light goods (PLG), This places it in the paying tax disc region,I'm restoring her to as near original spec as I can, but with a new wing and new metal welded into her, Originality is a questionable thing, all the parts remain correct for the year of manufacture. So how do I go about getting classed as Historic and road tax free?[frame]Image[/frame]

Apparently you have to apply for Historic Vehicle status at a local DVLA office. Here's the info;

It should be changed automatically when you submit your documents.
You still get charged double on the Severn Bridge as a commercial vehicle :(
P.S. Don't let them have your original log book or you will lose it

I got the PLG status on Monty removed in the Brighton office.

(Just in case you dont know where it is, turn left out of the station down trafalgar street (downhill) and its in the first block of buildings on the right hand side (modern buildings) and theres a map showing where the office is located :D

just need a v10,v5c.mot and insurance.
If you are desperate, you can tax it at full price locally (or online) and get it refunded afterwards when you get all the docs to local office - you will still need V5C, MOT and insurance all with the correct details on them to satisfy the office.

Dare I say "don't worry too much"? I found the DVLA quite amenable when I had a problem with my V5 after buying my van earlier this year. Obviously I hadn't looked carefully enough on purchase, because what was the chassis number on the V5 actually turned out to be the engine number and it had been like this for all the 41 years the van had existed. I gloomily foresaw huge problems in getting it changed, but thanks to some good advice from the LCV Register and photographic evidence of the VIN plate (still attached to the passenger inner door panel) the DVLA issued me with a new V5 with all the numbers in the correct place. I really had expected to have to have the vehicle checked by them, but they accepted my explanation and rudimentary evidence. I hope I'm not proved wrong, but my feelings were completely unfounded. Have you contacted LCV Register? They might have come across this before. With the computerisation of MoT, the testing station would not have accepted a van with incorrect details.

The method to change to Historic is painless, so no need to worry. The only painful thing is that you can't change the logbook until you're finished and have your MOT and insurance and need to tax it.
If the local office is near to you, then all is well and good. My local office was closed 10 years ago so I'm faced with half a day off work to get via B'Ham or Worcestershire. Hence if you got your resto done and MOT just in time to get to a rally (as I seem to have a habit of doing) then paying the fee and having it re-imbersed later becomes the only solution!
Better solution would be to get ready ahead of time and be a bit more patient than I am!

Hi

I recently changed the taxation class on an old motorbike to historic.
Its very simple - you need to mot and insure the vehicle first then you post it all to your local dvla office with a tax application form V10 and a note that you want historic vehicle tax. They will sort it all out for you.

You can of course go to the office in person and if posting make sure you copy all the documents first in case they get lost!!!

Tax disc arrived in about 3 days and new V5C a week later - so an excellent service. :D :D

I agree, it was very easy. I turned up in person with my MOT cert, Insurance Cert, current V5C and DVLA form filled out. 30 minutes later I walked out with a new tax disc and a new V5c in the post..... not a single penny changed hands... bliss :D

It's the default setting I think.
A better question is how not to get charged as a commercial vehicle on the Dartford crossing and elsewhere probably.

PLG was the old classification (pre historic, LGV, Private etc) and covered all cars and light commercials. If a car hasnt been on the road since whenever historic road tax came into place then it will still show PLG

It means the vehicle is registered as a private/light goods (plg) vehicle and like other groups requires road tax £££'s to be paid. Historic tax class costs £0 per year.
