Gearstick hole in the wrong place. 803 to a 1098

Post by lesrollins »

I have taken the 803cc engine and gearbox out of my 1956 split screen and sold it. In its place I brought a 1098 engine and gearbox which I helped take out of a morris minor. The trouble is whilst fitting the engine and gearbox back into my car the gearstick hole is not lining up where the 803 gearstick hole is, the 1098 gearstick hole sits under the floor of the car. Do I need to cut the floor and then get a gearbox cover from a later model car.

You'll need a gearbox cover from a later car. If I remember correctly, you'll need to cut a little of the floor away as well

There is a conversion for fitting an 803 gear lever to the back of a 1098 box, contact John Evans for advice. Advert in Minor Matters

Thanks for the help I have now sorted it out. Thanks to a jigsaw and a metal cutting blade in the dremmel. I finished the job today and I managed to get a second hand plate from the morris guy near oxford who was very helpful and even stays open until about 6.30 on a saturday, ideal if you need to get a job finished. Recomended ! The handbrake does sit a little close to the gearstick but I,m sure it will be okay. The only downside is I now need a set of new carpets the ones I brought some time ago were for a 803 so the holes is in the wrong place. So I suppose I could put them on flea bay and try and get some money back. Red brand new never fitted.

Hi,

How much is needed to be cut from the floor to fit the 1098cc 'box to an 803cc shell? Once again I'm looking for options on modding my '56 Splitscreen. If the floor needs to be cut, it could be back to the Ford Type 9 'box again, or using the 803 gearchange conversion on a 1275 Midget Box.

Cheers
