Think that you should remove the plunger before the gearstick to prevent the plunger and spring from ending up in the bowels of the remote mechanism and causing tears and wailing.
You may need to lift the tail of the remote mechanism to clear the plunger bolt-head from the transmission tunnel, I lever it upwards with a large screwdriver
