Rad Caps

Hi All,

As part of my post Donington check over last week-end, I noticed that the Pick-Up still has what looks like, the original radiator cap fitted. Complete with (faded) original AC markings!
I don't know why I didn't notice before!

No-one locally keeps a rad cap in stock for the Minor :
( They say they do on the phone but when you turn up in person, they can't find it!)

SO my question is;

I am able to get cheaply from work, a cap that is the right 'height' etc.
BUT it is rated at 7 pounds, not 4 like the old one.

As a TEMPORARY measure only, will I have problems if I fit this??

I'd be interested in peoples views.

You would be ok in an emergency but you would be running
at nearly twice the designed pressure, ok if your rad and hoses
are in good condition. You can get one posted from any number
of Minor specialists.

I had a long chat with someone on sunday, at our local rally, who used to work on the Minor production line.

He told me that the Minor was fitted with a variety of radiator caps, basically whatever was available at that time.

Anything between 4 and 7 pounds were fitted with no problems at all.

My radiator and hoses are nearly new so I don't foresee any problems.

Out of interest what is the 7lb one off, as I was told that to run a higher temp thermostat, I would need a higher pressure rad cap. Not sure it all made sense. But would be keen to give it a go for Winter, in an attempt to keep the heater a bit warmer.

any advice?

My saloon runs with an 88degC thermostat and 4psi radiator cap all year with next to nil water loss. So at a guess the system must be operating at less than 4psi even with the slightly higher temperature.

The 7 pound cap is an early Morgan 4/4 one, which I got from work.
Just out of interest (?) the V8 Morgans, the +8's, use 15 pound caps!

Motor factors like Partco etc. normally keep a selection in stock.

Dennis, where did you get your 7lb cap from. Might save me looking for a morgan one.

I have found a source of Rad caps both 4lb and 7lb for £2.00 each plus postage for a small order, these are for brand new not N.O.S. so if there enough interest for some I will order some, I will also ask my local branch members as well to try and increase the order size. It seems reasonable as the speciaists want about £3.00 + vat for the 4lb ones and dont list the 7lb ones.

I managed to recently get a brand new rad cap rated at 4lbs.... You shoudl be able to get one via your local garage supplier. Mine cost me all of 4 quid. - It's so cheap I've got a spare!
