sidevalve crankshaft journal sizes
Hi there, can anyone help please. we have a 1950 Morris Minor sidevalve 918cc in our workshops. Amongst other things it needs a Crankshaft regrind, but there are no markings on the Main bearings therefore we do not know whether it has been Ground before or what size. What we need is the factory specifications so we can get the crank measured and reground if it is possible. I dont even mind buying a workshop manual if thats what i have to do.I have to say that all the MORRIS MINOR specialists have been no help at all.

Re: sidevalve crankshaft journal sizes
According to my workshop manual for a 918 side valve they're as follows:
Mains
Std= 1.654in or 42mm
Min Grind= 1.614 or 40.984mm
Crank pin
Std = 1.575in or 40mm
min grind= 1.535 or 38.984mm
can anyone else confirm/correct these?
Hope these help
Regards
Steve B

Re: sidevalve crankshaft journal sizes
Standard Main Journal diameter 42mm, 1.654in
Minimum Dia. after regrind 40.984mm, 1.614in
Standard Crankpin Dia. 40mm, 1.575in
Minimum Dia. after regrind 38.984mm, 1.535in.
Journals must be correctly filletted or the crankshaft can break (I know!)
There is a crankshaft for sale on the Series MM messageboard
Make sure that you use the torque settings on the Series MM website,http://seriesmm.mmoc.org.uk Tech. Info, and not the Series 11 settings given in the workshop manual. If you are not familiar with the side valve engine I would recommend that you get a workshop manual. Has the car got a USHM2 or USHM3 engine?
Could you please PM me the chassis no and reg. of the car so that I can check it against the register.
Any assistance you need, I may be able to help. The main dealers do not want to know if earlier than '52 (with one or two exceptions)
Thanks
Mike Perry

Re: sidevalve crankshaft journal sizes
Try Pooks Motor Books website. You need the BMC Workshop Manual AKD 530 which includes the Series MM, Haynes Manuals do not include the MM

Just what you need and you get the driver's handbook as well.
You can always sell it on to the car owner afterwards

Re: sidevalve crankshaft journal sizes
Most suppliers do not stock Series MM parts. I keep a list of specialist suppliers and manufacturers

Re: sidevalve crankshaft journal sizes
The file is part of an address file. Let me know what you want and I can suggest companies that supply or produce them.
If something has to be manufactured the MMOC spares may sometimes agree to having a batch produced which will bring the cost down.

Re: sidevalve crankshaft journal sizes
Clutch is the same as 803/948, available from most suppliers
Gaskets are available from Gaskets for Classics.
Not sure what detent spring you are refering to. Can you identify it on the diagram?[frame]
