Re: how loud
I think it is just down to the discretion of the MOT tester. Though I should imagine the police can stop you for an exhaust being too loud, and not sure where they stand on it, but I presume that if you have a valid MOT they should be fine with it, but don't quote me!!

Re: how loud
You are just asking to get pulled by the cops - who WILL find something wrong with your car and/or your driving. They can simply say it is 'excessively noisy' - and have it towed away to the Pound. It will then cost you a small fortune to retrieve it - and a fine to pay - and points on your licence - and increased Insurance premium (that's IF they will still Insure you). It's really really NOT worth it.
Here you go - Section 59 of the RTA - second warning gets the car impounded........you really really do not want that to happen.
" The Legislation:
Section 59 Police Reform Act 2002 states that -
Where an officer has reasonable grounds for believing that a motor vehicle is being used in a manner which contravenes Road Traffic Act Section 3 (Careless Driving) OR Section 34 (Driving elsewhere than on a road) AND also the manner of use of the vehicle is causing or has been causing or is likely to cause, alarm distress or annoyance to members of the public, Section 59 can be used to:-
initially give a written warning (valid for twelve months)
(commonly called a Section 59 Notice)
and on a subsequent occasion to seize the vehicle.
(it will probably end up in the crusher, or may be ransomed back to the owner)
A constable in uniform has the power to order the person driving to stop the vehicle, to seize and remove the vehicle, to enter any premises on which the officer has reasonable grounds for believing the motor vehicle to be and to use reasonable force. Seizure can made only if a warning has been given, or believed to have been given, or if a warning is clearly being ignored.
So, usually it's a two-stage process - a warning or notice first, seizure if you persist or repeat.

Re: how loud
hmmm, that sounds like bad news. though to be honest round here there are so many suped up corsas and saxos actually driving dangerously and with 100% window tints all round I hope the police would go for them first!

Re: how loud
Probably not many Brownie points for pulling a Morris Minor, and I can imagine the conversation in the canteen!

Also - note this - http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales ... -27164236/
I believe they are wrong to say the legal limit is 82dBA - this may be so for NEW cars - but I believe there is no actual maximum limit for older cars. However - as above - they only have to consider it 'excessive' - and you are booked.
I always found it best to try to avoid attention from the cops. Many years ago my mate in his Mini was spotted after passing a cop car (going the other direction) at obvious high speed. They lifted the back of the car and found they could move it along - so obviously the handbrake was faulty - the exhaust was considered 'excessive' - and he was cautioned for dangerous driving. They didn't get that to stick - but he was booked for the exhaust and the handbrake.......

Re: how loud
reminds me of a story my dad told me back in the 50's he got pulled over because his motor bike was too loud.
The copper said that it was too difficult for him to prove so he looked around the bike, found that the horn did not work and gave him a ticket for having no audible means of approach!

Re: how loud
Cherry bomb isn't really a silencer as such - more of an expansion chamber than much else. If you have already been pulled by the cops - you can be sure they will be watching out for you now........ take the warning.

Re: how loud
I'm with BMC on this- even a standard Minor only has one exhaust silencer so is noticably louder than a modern car, I often get chav types loking round when they hear the car coming- louder than normal fruity Minor exhaust is already noticable so I don't see the need to make it even louder.hotrodder13 wrote:we dnt get on with our negibours anyway so not botherd haha, i did get a verbal warning for dangerous driving becuase someone complained,(next is section 59) and the copper did say to me im suprised you could drive like that in a minor, i said you cant so only got a warning, and i asked my mot tester and he said there no real limit for an older car so just gona take it easy
Plus if you have had a warning from the Police, please take it seriously! It is good advice to consider driving more carefully and be considerate over the noise. The Police usually take no notice of classic cars drivers as they stereotype us all as good law-abiding citizens, let's keep it that way!
Cheers John - all comments IMHO

Re: how loud
NO - that's just crazy - all you are doing is blocking up the pipe and creating back pressure for the engine to work against! I have to ask - who gives you these various MAD pieces of advice ??? just fit another silencer. Simples.
