rear back axle large nuts
hi please does any one know the size of the large nuts thats at the end of the axles so i can remove the the nuts to put oil seals in behind the break shoes
Re: rear back axle large nuts
The only oil seals are the paper gasket and the thin rubber ring that sits in the groove on the hub and is compressed by the halfshaft when it's screwed on. You only need to undo the nut if you want to change the bearing. The nut is 1 7/8th " (one and seven-eighths of an inch)

Re: rear back axle large nuts
is their a rubber oil seal behind the large nut???
Re: rear back axle large nuts
No, the only thing behind the nut is the bearing. The seals are between the half shaft flange and the hub. You don't need to take the nut off.

Hi
There is an oil seal within the hub behind the bearing surely? This seals the hub to the axle Pt No. BTA 108.

I've just looked at some diagrams, and I think you're right - I don't remember seeing one on mine!
Isn't the bearing lubricated with the oil from the axle?

Re: rear back axle large nuts
Yes the bearing is lubricated from the axle oil and the oil seal behind the bearing stops it from pouring out all over the brakes!
The half shaft flange gasket and 'O' ring stop the oil from escaping from the front of the hub.
Where is the oil leaking from? At the back of the hub, behind the brake shoes, or from the half shaft flange?

At this point I'd like to claim temporary insanity due to owning too many minors/inhaling too much cellulose/make up your own reason*. Of course there's an oil seal!
Lets start again - the spanner you want is 1 7/8th inches.
*pick whichever poor excuse you like

Yes 1 7/8" AF is the size of the hub retaining nut - you might be able to use a 48mm one as well, but it is 0.015" bigger so keeping it on the nut might be a tad more tricky.

And - as I am sure many regulars have been waiting for it........... - many just hit the nut a sharp rap with a rather blunt chisel and a wee heavy hammer. Note the left hand one is left-hand thread........ They come off with no problem doing this in my experience - and there is no damage to the nut that in any way affects it's ability to hold everything together! Refit is obviously a reversal of the loosening process. It works.
