for the past few weeks everytime i try to refuel, i can only do it slowly cause it spits back at me, what can cause this

When we got my wife's Tourer, the splashback was appalling & obviously had been for some time 'cos that side plastic lights cover was in a terrible state , frosted with petrol damage.
I decided to replace the very perished rubber pipe connecting filler to tank. In the old pipe, at the tank end, was a coarse mesh filter, just like a tea strainer.
I can only assume that it was to prevent siphoning off petrol.
Anyway I removed the tea strainer & it fills a lot better, but carefully.
Don't suppose that helps at all, but I wanted to share the story
