Museums in the south west

Post by polo2k »

Hi all
Ive recently been having a bit of a museum fest!
Couple of weeks ago went to one in bourton-on-the-water (GLOS)
Then went to Beaulieu last week and yesterday went to one in Calne (near swindon) then visited the one in Bourton on the water again.

All of them have been fantastic in their own way.
Beaulieu http://www.beaulieu.co.uk/ is a massive collection and some very rare and old cars in there including quite a bit of F1, top gear exhibit including lots of challenge cars, a James bond bit and currently a display of promo vehicles including the duckhams oul can, various "spherical" cars etc.

Atwell motor museum in Calne http://www.atwellwilson.org.uk/ is a varied collection and has a nice feel to it, really peaceful and nice to just wander through. quite a few vintage bikes too and lots of Rolls royces.

Cotswold Motor museum http://www.cotswold-motor-museum.co.uk this place is simply amazing! `I could quite happily visit this place daily and always see something new. its a massive collection in beautiful surroundings and it as much about the world around cars and garages through time. it is also the home or brum so you can see bits of the museum in some of the programs, they were playing the intro to the program and where brum goes over a chequered floor it is driving through the first exhibit room.
these videos are both filmed in and around the museum (in the first one where it shows the concrete structure I dont know where that is) (in the second one where he drives out that is simply driving round the town)

Bourton on the Water is a favourite of both my wife and myself. we always visit it every time we go to Bourton.

A little secret for you (I turn on their Christmas lights) for the last 4years. The people of Bourton On the water hold their Victorian Christmas Evening on the 1st Friday Dec. They have a large Christmas tree right in the middle of the River and when the Christmas Lights are on it transforms the place into a picture postcard place.

I know of a Motor Museum in Haverfordwest, West wales. Nr. Simpsons Cross. The museum is not bad but the museum staff are not well trained for the public.
