Petrol smell in car
My car's been into the garage for, among other things, a smell of petrol in the cabin. It seems quite strong to me yet the mechanic, who drove the car home and back yesterday, tells me he can't smell it...?? They've checked the fuel sender and all the lines and can't find anything wrong - I'm just glad I don't smoke!! Any suggestions as to where I might start?
Thanks
Bernard

Re: Petrol smell in car
Make sure the carb is not overfilling due to a worn float chamber needle. The fuel pump ticking occasionally with just the ignition on can be a give away.

Re: Petrol smell in car
Had a smell of petrol in then traveller when we first got it. Seemed to occur worse on overrun or when revving to down change the gear. Found there was no tubing on the carb overflow - interesting if it was exiting on top of a hot exhaust! - so a short length of plastic tube to route any overflow below car. No smell now, even SWMBO says so!

Re: Petrol smell in car
Good point Beero. Never actually saw fuel coming out, but we did reduce the smell! Guess that is another item on the to do list.

Re: Petrol smell in car
Sometimes the top of the tank is paper thin/full of small holes - check it VERY carefully!

Hi everyone,
Sorry not to reply any sooner to this thread, I wasn't able to do anything with the car due to a hand injury I picked up shortly after I posted the question.
Anyways, thanks for all your replies as ever. I took the car up to see its former owner, Dominic Excell, today, he sorted the smell problem in about 30 seconds with a Philips screwdriver! The problem was a loose jubilee clip on the filler hose, what worries me is that this eluded the "specialist" garage where I bought the car...
Thank God for Dom and the other members of this forum is all I can say!!
