Is this a ribbed gearbox?
Can anyone help? I removed the box from my '62 948 saloon today and I need to renew the clutch so if it is a ribbed 1098 box will I need a 1098 clutch?[frame]

Not sure if a 1098 clutch will fit a 948 engine or if you need a 1098 flywheel

if a 948 clutch was used on it before, then use a 948 clutch as a replacement. you could possibly fit a 1098 clutch if you really wanted to, but you might need to fit a 1098 flywheel

Re: Is this a ribbed gearbox?
Thanks everyone so far.
There lies my problem, don't know if it is a 1098 flywheel, clutch or what?
Are there any major differences to help me identify them?

Usually you would use the clutch system attached to the engine so in your case it would be a 948 clutch. If the backplate on the engine is a 948 one then defo a 948 clutch. The 948 backplate has a rolled edge rather than it being a solid plate....

If you have the gearbox out, is the current clutch get-at-able? I think I might be inclined to take it off and take it with you when you go to get a new one or at least have it in front of you along with a tape measure if you order a new one by phone. You can check diameters etc.

Re: Is this a ribbed gearbox?
Okay thanks, so I have established I have a 948 backplate, and the 1098 clutch is bigger than the 948, so if my pressure plate is 8 1/4" dia and the driven plate is 6 1/4" dia then which one is it?
Don't want to take it along to a motor factors, prefer to buy on-line.

Thanks David, I looked at the pics on ESM and it would seem I have the 948 clutch.[frame]
