small plastic clips in fire wall

Post by sii803 »

Can anybody tell me the purpose of some small plastic clips fitted throught my fire wall. They follow around the bonnet line. I think there is about five of them. In the automotive industry in australia we refer to them as "dogs dicks". They are inserted from the cabin side and look as thought they should be securing something. The car is a 54 series II.

I want to weld up any redundant holes before I paint. There are also some holes over by the fuel pump. I know one is for the wirring, what are the others for?

Any help would be much appreciated.

They sound like the clips to hold the sound deadening on. On my '53 they are metal clips. The head looks like a drawing pin, but the part that goes through the hole is made up of three parts so it has some spring to it. Maybe someone has replaced these with a later part.

Never heard of those in the UK industry. The closest is from a donkey which refers to the rubber grommet that typically links the doors to the body allowing the wires through.

:D Just been and had a look at my 57 traveller, and he clips are the 3pin metal clips like lowedb described, if the technology hasn't failed me I hope the photo below shows the beast.

The four larger holes on the bulkhead by the petrol pump are indeed for the sound deadening, the two smaller ones lower down are for the bifurcated rivets that hold the rear of the dash.

Hope that helps. 8)

Unless you are going to use the car in any motor sport, why not use blanking grommets in unwanted holes?

I think that under many layers of paint they are indeed the metal clip that secures the sound dedening, I will have to try and track that part down or make one.

It is not entirely uncommon to have a few extra holes that people have "added" over the years, and I think it looks neater to get rid of them.

I have one such hole through the inner gaurd to the foot well. It passes through two panels and seems to have been made by drilling six holes and "joining" them up. To repair it I am going to use a hole saw to give me a round hole aprox. 2". Then I will make a metal disk from sheet and weld it in. I guess the hole was for an antenna.

Thanks for the help, its info like the stuff you guys give me I cant find in books!

The "small holes lower down" for bifurcated rivets are for the
PARCEL SHELF fixing.

 Sorry Willie, of course you are right, the small holes are for the parcel shelf, I was having a senior moment (at 37 ??) and couldn't think what it was called.

No problem WILLIE, its how we all learn.

It's great that we have this forum, I can't think where else there is as much access to all the years of experience that are added together here.

Great stuff.
