Post by cadetchris »

going to fix the leaking brake cylinder on primrose, but i have pattern cylinders, not the original lockheed variety. would lockheed seals work? or should i have a rethink

I think the pattern cylinders use an O ring type seal - originals are buckets.

Riley 1.5 front brake shoes

Ah, i do have a pattern rear cylinder as a spare, so could i just whip off the ring from there and use that on the front? Is their any way of telling the difference between a patern and original just by looking at them?

Rear and front will probably NOT be same diameter - don't do it! Original fronts - you can just lift the piston out - the seal sits underneath.

personally, and I know theres nothing wrong with repair kits,I would never use them unless a replacement new cylinder was not available. Tom Roy lists copy cylinders for £7.75 so is it worth messing about just buy two new front copies, originals listed at £14 so even they are very cheap like most things for minors

so where do i get a new O ring from? i am a little weary or getting a new cylinder as when ever i go to replace once something else always breaks, so more expense and time off the road is incurred, so i can quite happily pop a new seal in without having to take off the cylinder.

I really don't know if new O rings are readily available from Minor suppliers - and that may not be the real problem anyway. Once you know the size of the O ring - then yes - readily available commercially - specify 'Viton'
