urgent 3rd party driving
Can anyone help me with this urgent request that I have been told by a friend last night (fri) that with FJ insurance that i have on my morris that classic car insurance does not allow one to drive someone else's car on third party basis if say some one was feeling unwell and there car cover is for driver only cover.

A classic policy would not normally cover driving other peoples vehicles - a lot of general policies do not either.. If your certificate does not state that you can - then you can't.

Re: urgent 3rd party driving
The best way is to check with FJ and if they say you can drive another vehicle on your policy make sure they point you to that part of the policy and make a note of the person who told you. Even if it does cover you I think it would be basic cover and if you damaged the car you were driving it wouldn't be repaired by your insurance you would have to foot the bill yourself.
I have heard of organisations like the AA who will recover a vehicle if the driver is taken ill and you can also purchase short term cover (sometimes by the day or week, hate to think what the cost of this might be).

The insurance Cos are cutting this out more and more these days - to stop folks insuring a Minor and driving about in a Ferrari! Even if the cover does apply - the other car must be insured in it's own right or the 'cover' is void.

Re: urgent 3rd party driving
thanks to those that replied, i will be checking with FJ in the morning, but it might be cheaper if i get my son and daughter to put me on their insurance as a named driver just to be on the safe side.
Re: urgent 3rd party driving
It actually REDUCED my Daughter's premium when I was added to her policy.

Thanks BMC I will let he know

If in doubt ring the people who issued the policy and check and check the paperwork in your policy too.
If you have an accident and are uninsured it can get very nasty. Even if no-one is hurt and any damage is minimal your future insurance premiums will go through the roof.
