Hello - New Member Mit 1949 Lowlight

Post by Low Light'n It »

Hello All,

Greetings from across the pond, hope all is well on this fine weekend..

I am a Morris head, have a LHD '59 Pickup (1275 convert, rib case trans, etc) and a 1949 Lowlight Tourer that is mostly complete and original that we'll be doing a full restoration on this winter. The car has only been in the States since the mid to late 1990's apparently, and is in sweet shape in the rot department. Check the reg as well "MMM 868", how cool is that. Anyone have any history on this car???

Here's a pic for your all's enjoyment.

At any rate, I've gone through the entire brake system, all the wheel cylinders / master cylinder / hoses are new, drums were in good shape, but the shoes were replaced as well. I finally got the thing bled correctly, and she works pretty decent.

My question being, the master looks to be the same bore as a T series MG (looks like exactly the same unit??), and I keep trying to compare the brakes (in my mind) to our '55 TF in terms of pedal feel. The drums are roughly 10" on the TF, so I know it will always stop better than the Morris, but has anyone played around with larger bore masters and created (perhaps) a bit more pedal effort, but higher hookup point in terms of pedal travel? If I panic stop the MM, I have yet to be able to lock them up. Normal, or back to the basics??

Thanks all, and I'll dive into the archives here and keep you posted on resto pics!

Welcome to the Forum Jeff. Very nice car - although hating the rear arch 'spats'! You really should be able to lock all 4 wheels at ~ 20 mph on a dry road. Either push harder - or change the brake shoes!!

Welcome to the site! I like your tourer, looks pretty good, show us some more pics please!! A guy in County Fermanagh has a 49 saloon withh MMM reg but I dont recall the numbers at the mo.

The master cylinder should have a 7/8 bore in an early car like this, mine is capable of locking up the wheels. Did you have the master cylinder out when you did the brakes? Sometimes the adjusting rod needs 'adjusted' if the cylinders been out and this can help with pushing power!

Thanks guys!!

The master was completely replaced and I adjusted the rod as far out as possible, so I think she is as good as can be there. I'm now leaning towards a bad new master, as I suspect the piston isn't seated correctly or the the bore is compromised.

Here are more pics.

Although hard to see in these pics, she needs quite a bit of work, a poor paint and trim job (the not so hard to see portion  ), will be taking up quite a bit of my time. The motor leaks a bit as usual, but a fresh clutch and very tight 'box make for a sweet basis to start with.

Interested in any info folks can come up with on the car, and as for the spats, they would not have been my first choice, but they've grown on me lately!

Cheers!

The spats are certainly very unusual, I would keep them and perhaps add a set of white wall tyres, my MM has whites fitted and at first I was going to remove them now I think they help break up all the black!

It looks a very tidy car, not sure if the green interior was original but it is in far better condition than mine.
