removing old wires
my car has had an alternator put on at sum point and the past owner and left the old wires, can i just remove these also can i remove the box next to the fuse box

Look at the wiring diagram for your car and work out what they should do and check if they are live before removing them. When fitting an alternator the control box is rewired so that it acts as a junction box.

Depends if they are being used or not - the 'clever' way to fit an alternator just uses the original wires - connected slightly differently of course.

Here's one - instead of 'new wire' - you can just use the original D and F wires, and connect them as shown.

So, unless you want to retain the old control box, surely you can just remove it and join A and A1??

well i blew mine and i have a wire conneting the termials i know its not gud but as said above can i not just join them and remove it ??

Yes - just join A and A1. Some like to keep the box - for originality! The point being - the wires in the harness that went to the dynamo can be used to power the alternator. No 'new' wires required.

Was the voltage regulator only to even out the votage from the dynamo? I too am fitting an alternator and have removed the whole loom to tidy it up and would be very keen to remove the voltage reg if I can, so it's just simply a case of joining A and A1? Can the rest of the wires just be removed?

The Volts Reg does exactly what it says on the box! It regulates the dynamo charging voltage - and also disconnects it if it's not going fast enough to generate a charge. All this is taken care of electronically inside the alternator - so no need (in most cases) for an external regulator.

I have been following this thread carefully. Thanks for the clearly explained wiring diagram. I am thinking of ordering a new wiring loom for my pick up and as I will be fitting it with a 1275cc Marina engine complete with alternator, I will order the loom with alternator specification, thus I assume this will do away completaly with the dynamo control box. Is there anything else I should look out for when doing this conversion to alternator?

Make your list of all the "additional " pieces of electrical equipment you need/ want ( now and in the future ) on the vehicle,
e.g.hazard lights, rear fog lights, spot lights, clock, etc.
In relative terms it's best to get these incorporated now rather later ( adding loads of extra untidy wiring ).
You can leave some connections "unused" until you find the necessary funds to buy an accessory

The longer the above list gets ....the greater the electrical load becomes for an alternator to power.

Really no great need for an alternator - unless running lots of extra lights ............ Be sure to go to negative earth though - if you DO fit an alternator.
