Which engine do you have? 948 or 1098? The 948 timing cover had a felt seal for the crankshaft pulley, the 1098 had a 'proper' lip seal.

In the original setup, neither had any way of adjusting the chain tension. The standard single row chain had 2 rubber rings that fit on the camshaft sprocket and provide a limited amount of tension, but that is all.

Almost always - the small crank sprocket will need renewing - the teeth will be worn and 'sharp'.

It certainly won't be using the felt seal then!

i changed mine a year ago it had a rubber seal..1098cc.but when i did my mates 948cc it had a felt seal in the cover plate...i changed mine over to duplex and iv never looked back..but my mate keept it to single and the old rubber tention set up...within 3 weeks the old timing chain rattle was back....another note it leaked before fitting felt seal and it never stoped it leaking even with a new felt seal....

It never will - the leak is caused by crankcase pressure pushing oil past the seal. Remove the pressure to cure the leak.
